Start with Istanbul, where one day in the Old City covers Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar. Add Cappadocia for fairy chimneys, cave hotels and an optional sunrise balloon flight, or head west to Ephesus and Pamukkale for Roman streets and white travertine terraces. Antalya brings the Mediterranean, with the old town of Kaleiçi, the Düden Waterfalls and the ancient cities of Perge, Aspendos and Side. The Black Sea coast offers Ottoman Safranbolu and the green valleys around Uzungöl, Gallipoli and Troy make a moving day trip from Istanbul, and Mardin and Göbeklitepe open the south-east.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for combining city sightseeing with outdoor sites such as Ephesus and Cappadocia. Summer is hot inland and ideal on the coast, and winter is quiet, with fewer crowds at the major museums.
