Places Along the Route
Icherisheher (Old City)
The walled Old City of Baku has narrow stone lanes, historic gates, courtyards and small craft shops. This UNESCO-listed quarter is best explored on foot, where each turn opens onto another quiet square.
Flame Towers
Three flame-shaped skyscrapers define modern Baku and change colour with LED lighting at night. Seen from the Old City walls or the seafront, they contrast sharply with the stone streets below.
Gobustan
Gobustan is a UNESCO-listed reserve of rocky hills covered in engravings thousands of years old, from hunters and animals to boats. A short drive away, the mud volcanoes bubble slowly with cold grey mud.

Ateshgah Fire Temple
An old sanctuary built around natural gas flames on the Absheron Peninsula, where pilgrims once came to pray. Arched cells surround a central courtyard and altar, making it a compact stop with plenty of atmosphere.

Narikala Fortress
A fortress on the ridge above Tbilisi’s old town, with origins in the 4th century and many later rebuilds. The ruined walls and small church give wide views over the river, the old rooftops and the city.
Maiden Tower
A cylindrical stone tower from around the 12th century that rises above the Old City walls. Its origins are still debated and several legends surround it; the upper floors look out over the rooftops and the Caspian bay.
Palace of the Shirvanshahs
A 15th-century complex of the Shirvan rulers with a palace, mausoleum, mosque and bathhouse around quiet courtyards. Pale limestone façades with fine carving show how the medieval court of the region was built.
Heydar Aliyev Center
A white cultural building by Zaha Hadid whose surfaces fold and ripple without a single sharp corner. It is one of the best-known examples of contemporary architecture in the Caucasus, and the plaza around it is pleasant to walk.
Sheki Khans’ Palace
A small summer palace of the 18th-century khans, famous for its painted walls and stained-glass windows made without nails or glue. The colours inside make it one of the most photographed rooms in Azerbaijan.
Sighnaghi
A hilltop town in the Kakheti wine region, enclosed by old walls with towers. Cobbled streets, balconied houses and viewpoints look out over the Alazani Valley towards the Greater Caucasus on clear days.
Mtskheta
The old capital of Georgia and a UNESCO World Heritage site, set where two rivers meet just north of Tbilisi. Its churches and lanes record centuries of the country’s religious and political history.
Jvari Monastery
A 6th-century stone church on a hilltop above the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. Its compact cross-shaped plan is an early example of Georgian church building and the view below is memorable.
