By the sixth morning of a good Turkey trip, you have probably seen three different countries: an imperial city of domes and ferries, a volcanic landscape of cave rooms and balloons, and by the end of the week an ancient Greek and Roman coast with white terraces above the plain. Ten days is a good length for a first trip to Türkiye. It is long enough to see the four places most visitors dream of: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale. It is short enough that you will not feel you are rushing from one bus seat to the next.
We plan this route for guests all year, and the questions never change: which order, how many nights each, where to fly and what to drop if time runs short. This plan shows how to link them in a sensible order, what each day can look like and where the hours really go.
Quick Answer: How Should You Split Ten Days?
| Region | Nights | Why | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | 3 | Two days for the Old City and a third for the water or a day trip | Start and end here |
| Cappadocia | 3 | A balloon morning, the valleys and an underground city | Keep a spare morning for weather |
| Aegean coast | 2 | Ephesus and Pamukkale on consecutive days | Mostly a travel day in between |
| Istanbul | 1 | A calm last night before the flight home | Don't book a big sight on departure day |
Our view: fly between regions, keep a spare morning in Cappadocia and don't add a fifth region to a ten-day trip.
Why This Order Works
Türkiye is large, and the distances between these regions are long. The plan uses domestic flights to cross them, so your time goes to sightseeing instead of motorways.
- Istanbul first. Most international flights arrive here, and the city is a gentle introduction to Byzantine and Ottoman history.
- Cappadocia second. One short domestic flight takes you to central Anatolia. Three nights give you a spare morning in case a sunrise balloon flight is cancelled for weather.
- The Aegean third. A flight towards İzmir brings you to Ephesus and Pamukkale, which are best seen on consecutive days.
- Istanbul last. Ending where your international flight departs keeps the final day simple.
Our 9-Day Turkey Tour follows the same logic, with four domestic flights linking the regions.

Days 1-3: Istanbul
.jpg)
Spend Day 1 settling in and walking around Sultanahmet, where Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque face each other. Day 2 is for the Old City: the Byzantine and Ottoman sights, the Hippodrome, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar. Some museums and the bazaar have weekly closing days, so check them when you fix your dates.
On Day 3 choose between a Bosphorus cruise, an excursion to Bursa or a ferry to the Princes' Islands. Our 7-day Istanbul itinerary has more ideas if you want to stay longer in the city. If you are unsure whether to fly or take the road to Cappadocia, read how to get from Istanbul to Cappadocia. In the 9-Day Turkey Tour, Istanbul gets two nights, including a full Old City day with Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar.
Days 4-6: Cappadocia

Cappadocia feels like a different country from Istanbul: volcanic valleys, fairy chimneys, and homes and chapels carved into soft rock. Fly to Cappadocia on Day 4 and keep the afternoon free. On Day 5 visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum with its rock-cut chapels, then Paşabağ, known as Monks' Valley, and an Avanos pottery workshop. Day 6 is for an underground city, Pigeon Valley and the stone town of Ürgüp.
A sunrise balloon flight is the highlight for many people, but it depends on the weather. Read our Cappadocia hot-air balloon guide before you book, and keep a flexible morning. The 9-Day Turkey Tour gives Cappadocia three nights, with the Göreme Open-Air Museum, Paşabağ, Avanos, an underground city and Pigeon Valley.
Days 7-9: Ephesus and Pamukkale
Day 7 is mostly travel. The flight from Cappadocia to İzmir usually connects through Istanbul, followed by a road transfer to the coast. Treat it as a rest day, with an easy walk by the sea in the evening.
Ephesus

Day 8 belongs to Ephesus. You walk down Curetes Street to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, then visit the House of the Virgin Mary near Selçuk. In the afternoon you drive to Pamukkale, about three hours away, for the night. See our Ephesus travel guide for planning details.
Pamukkale

On Day 9, walk the travertine terraces barefoot and explore Hierapolis, with its Roman theatre and necropolis. Then head back towards İzmir for your flight to Istanbul. Our Pamukkale travel guide explains the rules on the terraces and what to bring. The last night in Istanbul and your departure on Day 10 keep the end of the trip calm, and leave room for a final stroll or some shopping. The 9-Day Turkey Tour spends three nights on the Aegean coast, so Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and Pamukkale are not rushed.

Where the Hours Really Go
On paper, ten days looks generous. In practice, three of them are travel-heavy: the flight from Istanbul to Cappadocia, the connection from Cappadocia towards İzmir and the long drive to Pamukkale and back. Count the airport time, the transfers and the check-ins, and the sightseeing days shrink to about six. That is why we keep Istanbul to three nights and don't try to add a day trip on a flight day. If you want extra slack, trim one site, not a night.
Best Season for This Route
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, since summer is hot at Ephesus and Pamukkale and winter can bring snow to Cappadocia. In July and August, start early at the ruins and keep the afternoon for shade. In winter, the route still works, but expect cold in Cappadocia, shorter days and a higher chance of weather delays, so keep a spare morning. Our guide to the best time to visit Turkey goes month by month.
How to Avoid the Crowds and the Touts
The big names are busiest from mid-morning in high season, so start early at Hagia Sophia, Ephesus and Pamukkale, and go to the Cappadocia valleys at the edges of the day. In each city, be wary of friendly strangers who tell you a site is closed or invite you to a "special" shop. Book balloons, transfers and tours through a source you trust, and ask who the operator is.
If You Have Fewer or More Days
With seven or eight days, keep Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus and treat Pamukkale as optional, or shorten Istanbul to two nights. With twelve to fourteen days, you can add Antalya and the Mediterranean coast, the Black Sea region or a day in Konya. Our Istanbul and Antalya itinerary is a good starting point, and the 9-Day Turkey Tour is the ready-made option when days are limited.

Practical Tips
- Book domestic flights early for April to October, and check baggage allowances.
- Pack in layers. Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean can feel like three different climates.
- Travel light. Hotels with steps and short flights are easier with a small bag.
- Keep your passport handy for domestic flights as well as international ones.
- Leave buffer time before your departure flight from Istanbul.
Where TourQuaz Packages Fit
You do not have to plan every transfer yourself. Our 9-Day Turkey Tour covers the same regions with four domestic flights, hotels with breakfast and an English-speaking guide on touring days. Our 8-day Grand Turkey tour covers the main highlights on a shorter route, with one night in Cappadocia and a Bursa day. If you prefer sea to ruins, the 7-Day Istanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya Tour swaps the Aegean for the Mediterranean. If you want a long Istanbul stay, see the 7-Day Istanbul Tour. What the Photos Don't Show You
Photos of this route show the best moment of each place: Hagia Sophia at dusk, a sunrise full of balloons and a sparkling white terrace with nobody on it. In reality there are airport queues, early starts, a very long day of transfers and a few mornings when the balloons don't fly. The Aegean leg is hot in summer, and the terraces at Pamukkale are busy in the middle of the day.
What the photos can't show is the contrast. One day you are in a vast city of ferries and calls to prayer, a few days later in a cave room with no street noise, and a few days after that among Roman columns by the sea. Keep a little slack, don't over-plan and the route gives you more than the postcards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10 days enough for Turkey?
It is enough for a first visit to Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean, provided you use domestic flights. You will not see everything, and that is fine.
What is the best time of year for this route?
Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable, since summer is hot at Ephesus and Pamukkale and winter can bring snow to Cappadocia. Our guide to the best time to visit Turkey goes into more detail.
Do I need to book the balloon flight in advance?
It is popular, so ask us early, and keep a flexible morning in case of bad weather.
Can I do this trip on my own?
Yes, but the transfers and flights take planning. We can arrange a shared or private version with guides, for example our 9-Day Turkey Tour.
Should I add Antalya?
Only if you have more days. With ten days, choose either the Aegean or the Mediterranean, not both.
How many nights should I spend in each region?
Three in Istanbul, three in Cappadocia and two on the Aegean coast, with a last night in Istanbul, is a comfortable balance.
Want this route arranged for you?
See our 9-Day Turkey Tour, which covers Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale, and ask us to add a night or two. Short on time? Our 8-day Grand Turkey tour covers the main highlights on a shorter route, with one night in Cappadocia.
