Tour Overview

7-Day Istanbul, Ephesus and Pamukkale Tour with Hierapolis

This 7-day Istanbul, Ephesus and Pamukkale tour starts in Istanbul and runs for six nights: three in Sultanahmet and three in Kuşadası on the Aegean coast, joined by a domestic flight to İzmir. Both Aegean excursions leave from the same Kuşadası hotel, so you unpack only once on the coast.

Istanbul brings Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and a Bursa day with the Uludağ cable car. Day 5 visits the House of the Virgin Mary and Ephesus, with the Library of Celsus and Curetes Street. Day 6 belongs entirely to Pamukkale: the white travertine terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis, entrance fees included. Allow about three hours of driving each way from Kuşadası.

It suits couples, families and anyone who wants history and landscape in one week. Choose a shared tour (groups of up to 20 guests on the Aegean days, lunch on tour days) or a private tour with your own vehicle and guide at your own pace. Included are breakfast in 4★ hotels (or similar), the flights, airport transfers and the Ephesus, Virgin Mary and Pamukkale entrances. Plan the Aegean days with our 12 must-see sights in Ephesus, explore the Ephesus and Pamukkale packages, or compare the shorter 6-day Istanbul, Bursa & Ephesus tour.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1Arrival in Istanbul & Boutique Hotel Check-in

Your English-speaking assistant waits in the arrivals hall of Istanbul Airport, and a private car brings you to your 4★ boutique hotel in Sultanahmet (or similar), usually within 45 to 90 minutes. Once you have checked in, nothing is planned, so you can rest or walk out into the old centre. The Hippodrome, once the Byzantine chariot arena, is only a few minutes away, and the surrounding lanes have simple restaurants for an unhurried dinner, which is not included. Tomorrow begins with Hagia Sophia, so an early night suits.

Overnight: Istanbul, Sultanahmet — 4★ boutique hotel (or similar)
Transport: Private airport transfer (about 45–90 min, depending on airport and traffic)
Tour: Shared or private (airport transfer is private in both options)
    Entrances: none
  • Day 2Istanbul Old City: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı & Grand Bazaar

Today you cover the main monuments of the Old City, on a shared tour with lunch or with your own vehicle and guide. You begin at Hagia Sophia, the cathedral that Byzantine emperors built in the 6th century, and cross to the Blue Mosque, known for its blue İznik tiles. The Hippodrome follows, where an Egyptian obelisk still stands from the chariot-racing era. After lunch you tour Topkapı Palace, the sultans’ residence for centuries (closed on Tuesdays), and end among the arched corridors of the Grand Bazaar (closed on Sundays), where ceramics, textiles and spices are on sale.

Meals: Breakfast; lunch on the shared option
Overnight: Istanbul, Sultanahmet — 4★ boutique hotel (or similar)
Transport: Full-day tour vehicle (shared group vehicle or private vehicle)
    Tour: Shared or private
Entrances: Istanbul museum fees payable on-site
  • Day 3Bursa & Uludağ Day Trip

After breakfast you cross the Sea of Marmara by ferry and continue by road to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman state, which lies below Mount Uludağ. The main experience is the Uludağ cable car, which climbs through forest to the ski-resort mountain above the city; the ticket is included on the shared option and payable on-site on the private option. In winter Uludağ is a ski area, so the views can come with snow. Lunch is included on the shared tour. In the evening you return to Istanbul and spend a third night at your Sultanahmet hotel.

Meals: Breakfast; lunch on the shared option
Overnight: Istanbul, Sultanahmet — 4★ boutique hotel (or similar)
Transport: Ferry across the Sea of Marmara, then drive to Bursa and back (shared group vehicle or private vehicle)
    Tour: Shared or private
Entrances: Uludağ cable car included on the shared option, payable on-site on the private option
  • Day 4Fly to İzmir & Transfer to Kuşadası

Check out after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your domestic flight from Istanbul to İzmir, ticket included. A private driver waits at İzmir Airport and takes you south to Kuşadası, the Aegean resort town where you spend the next three nights; the drive takes about one hour. After check-in the afternoon is free: walk along the seafront promenade and the marina, swim if the weather allows, or relax at the hotel. Both of the next two days start from this same hotel, so you unpack only once on the coast.

    Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Kuşadası — 4★ hotel (or similar)
Transport: Domestic flight Istanbul → İzmir (included); private transfer İzmir Airport → Kuşadası (~1 h)
Tour: Shared or private (flight and transfers are the same in both options)
    Entrances: none
  • Day 5Ephesus & the House of the Virgin Mary

A guide collects you at your Kuşadası hotel for a full day around Ephesus. You first visit the House of the Virgin Mary, a small stone chapel on a wooded hill where, according to tradition, Mary spent her last years. In Ephesus Ancient City you walk down Curetes Street, past the Library of Celsus and its two-storey marble facade, and into the Great Theatre, which seated about 25,000 spectators. The Terrace Houses, Roman villas with mosaics, are optional and paid on-site. The last stop is the lone column of the Temple of Artemis. Entrance fees are included, and lunch is included on the shared tour.

Meals: Breakfast; lunch on the shared option
Overnight: Kuşadası — 4★ hotel (or similar)
Transport: Full-day tour vehicle from the Kuşadası hotel (shared group vehicle or private vehicle)
    Tour: Shared or private
Entrances: Ephesus and House of the Virgin Mary included; Terrace Houses optional, payable on-site
Optional: Optional Ephesus Terrace Houses (payable on-site)
  • Day 6Pamukkale & Hierapolis

Hotel pick-up is around 07:30 for the drive of about three hours to Pamukkale, so the day is long but rewarding. The white travertine terraces, formed by calcium-rich thermal water, are the highlight, and you walk up through them to Hierapolis, an ancient spa city with a theatre and a necropolis. Cleopatra’s Pool, where you swim among fallen Roman columns, is optional and paid on-site, so bring swimwear and a towel. Entrance fees are included, and lunch is included on the shared tour. You return to Kuşadası in the evening and sleep in the same hotel; no night is spent in Pamukkale.

Meals: Breakfast; lunch on the shared option
Overnight: Kuşadası — 4★ hotel (or similar)
Transport: Full-day tour vehicle, about 3 h each way (shared group vehicle or private vehicle)
    Tour: Shared or private
Entrances: Pamukkale and Hierapolis included; Cleopatra’s Pool optional, payable on-site
Optional: Optional swim in Cleopatra’s Pool (payable on-site)
  • Day 7Departure via İzmir

Have breakfast at the hotel and check out. Your private driver takes you to İzmir Airport, about an hour from Kuşadası, for the domestic flight back to Istanbul, with your ticket included. If your flight is late in the day, the morning is free for a last walk by the sea or a coffee at the marina before the transfer. In Istanbul you connect with your international flight, which is not part of the tour. All services end on arrival at the airport, so keep your passport and flight details ready.

    Meals: Breakfast
    Overnight: —
Transport: Private transfer Kuşadası → İzmir Airport (~1 h); domestic flight İzmir → Istanbul (included)
Tour: Shared or private (flight and transfer are the same in both options)
    Entrances: none

Why Choose This Istanbul, Ephesus & Pamukkale Tour?

Three nights in Istanbul, then three nights in a single Kuşadası hotel on the Aegean coast: Ephesus and Pamukkale are both day trips from the same bed, and the flights to İzmir and back are included.

  • One hotel for both Aegean days — Ephesus on Day 5 and Pamukkale on Day 6 both start from the same 4★ Kuşadası hotel, so you unpack once and sleep there again after the long Pamukkale day.

  • Two UNESCO sites, one week — Ephesus and Hierapolis-Pamukkale are both on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and their entrance fees, including the House of the Virgin Mary, are covered; Cleopatra's Pool stays optional.
  • Shared or Private — Shared groups are capped at 20 guests on the Aegean days and include lunch on tour days. Private means your own vehicle and licensed guide on Days 2, 3, 5 and 6.

Best Time to Visit Istanbul, Ephesus and Pamukkale

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons for this tour: mild temperatures suit a full day of walking through the Old City and the open-air ruins of Ephesus and Hierapolis, which have little shade. Summer is hot in the Aegean, so an early start, a hat and water help. Winter is cooler and quieter. The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays and Topkapı Palace on Tuesdays.

Istanbul and Bursa: What Days 1–3 Offer

Istanbul’s Old City packs two thousand years of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history into a few walkable streets. Hagia Sophia was completed in 537 as a Byzantine cathedral and later served as a mosque; the Blue Mosque (1609–1616), with its six minarets and blue İznik tiles, faces it across the old Hippodrome; Topkapı Palace was the residence of the Ottoman sultans for roughly four centuries; and the Grand Bazaar, with more than 4,000 shops, is one of the oldest covered markets in the world. Plan to dress modestly for the mosques, and note that the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays and Topkapı Palace on Tuesdays.

The Bursa day crosses the Sea of Marmara by ferry to the city that was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, known for its mosques and tombs, its silk and its İskender kebap. From the city you ride the cable car up Uludağ, a mountain of about 2,500 metres that is a ski resort in winter and a cool retreat in summer.

What to Wear and Pack for Istanbul, Ephesus and Pamukkale

Pack for walking: shoes with a good grip for the marble streets of Ephesus, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the open-air sites, and a refillable water bottle. Bring a scarf or light shawl and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for mosque visits in Istanbul and Bursa. Evenings can be cool in spring and autumn, and Uludağ is noticeably colder than the city, so add a light jacket for the cable car day.

Because the domestic flight between Istanbul and İzmir has a baggage allowance, a soft bag is easier to carry than a hard suitcase. Swimwear and a towel are only needed for Cleopatra’s Pool, and a small bag for your shoes is useful on the Pamukkale terraces.

Shared or Private: Which Version Should You Choose?

Choose the shared tour if you like group sightseeing and a lower price: group tours with a maximum of 20 guests on the Aegean days, lunch on tour days, and the Bursa ferry and Uludağ cable car included (from $1,079 per person for six travelers).

Choose the private tour if you want your own vehicle and guide on Days 2, 3, 5 and 6, a flexible start time and a slower pace at the big sites (from $1,229 per person for six travelers; lunches and the Uludağ cable car ticket are paid separately). Prices change with group size, and the booking box above shows the exact price for your number of travelers.

Good to Know

Ephesus and Hierapolis have almost no shade, and the white terraces of Pamukkale reflect strong sun. In summer bring a hat, sunscreen and water.

Standard hotel check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is until 12:00. Early check-in or late check-out depends on availability; ask us and we will request it.

Expect a few hours on foot on each day. The marble streets of Ephesus are uneven and can be slippery, Hierapolis involves a gentle uphill walk, and the Pamukkale terraces are walked barefoot. Comfortable shoes with a good grip, sun protection and water are recommended.
