Dalyan

- Do you need easy beaches for children? Kemer and Side have gentle entry. Alaçatı's wind is exciting for older kids and surfers, but strong for small swimmers.
- Do you want history in the mix? Side and Kemer have ancient sites nearby, and Alaçatı and Cunda have old stone villages. Bodrum has its castle.

Coastal areas like Bodrum, Kemer and Side are hot and sunny in June, and the sea is warm enough to swim. The interior, including Cappadocia and Ankara, runs slightly cooler by day and much cooler at night. Exact temperatures vary from year to year, so check the forecast before you travel. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen and a hat, plus a light layer for the evenings and the interior.

Getting There and How Long to Stay

How to Avoid the Crowds (and the Touts)
July and August are the busiest, so June and early September give the same sea with more room. At the popular spots, go to the beach early or late. A few cautions:
- Boat tours: ask the operator's name, what's included and how long it lasts before you pay.
- Beach clubs and sunbeds: ask what the sunbeds cost, and whether a minimum spend applies.
- Taxis and transfers: pre-book, or agree on how the fare will work.
- Sun: the sun is strong, so keep covered, hydrated and shaded in the middle of the day.
Packing for a Coastal Summer Trip
Keep it light: swimwear, a quick-dry towel, a hat, sunglasses, strong sunscreen and sandals that can handle rocks and cobbles. Add a light layer for the evenings, especially on the Aegean coast where the wind picks up, and something modest for visits to mosques and old villages. Water shoes are a good idea at pebble beaches such as Konyaaltı. A refillable bottle and a small dry bag for boat days make a surprising difference.

What the Photos Don't Show You
Summer photos show an empty cove, a perfect sunset and a single boat. In reality the best spots fill up from July, the water is cooler in early June than the pictures suggest, the road to some of the prettiest coves is winding, and the harbours are loud in the evening. Some towns, like Side and Bodrum, are busy and commercial.
What the photos can't show is the long, easy rhythm of a coastal day: a late breakfast, a swim, an unhurried fish lunch, a walk along a harbour as the light turns gold. Leave room for it, and you'll bring home more than the picture.
