Places Along the Route
Karaköy
Once the busy port quarter on the Golden Horn, Karaköy now mixes old bank buildings and workshops with cafés, galleries and small food shops. It is the traditional starting point for the climb up to Beyoğlu.
Tünel Funicular
Opened in 1875, this short underground funicular is among the oldest subway lines in the world. It lifts passengers from the Karaköy waterfront to Beyoğlu in a couple of minutes and spares the steep climb.
Asmalı Mescit
Named after a small vine-covered mosque, this Beyoğlu quarter of narrow lanes and old apartment buildings is known for its taverns, tea houses and small eateries serving home-style Turkish dishes.
Çiçek Pasajı
Built in 1876 as the Cité de Péra on the site of a burned-down theatre, this covered passage took its name from the flower sellers who once worked here. Today its glass-roofed courtyard is lined with taverns.
İstiklal Avenue
Stretching about 1.4 kilometres from Tünel to Taksim Square, this pedestrian avenue is lined with 19th-century façades, consulates, bookshops and old arcades. A nostalgic red tram still rattles down its centre.
Taksim Square
Taksim takes its name from the 18th-century water distribution point that once stood here. Today the open square, with its Republic Monument of 1928, is a transport hub where metro lines and taxi ranks meet.
