Ephesus Travel Guide 2026: Tickets, Opening Hours & How to Get There

Ephesus is the best-preserved ancient city in the Eastern Mediterranean and one of Türkiye's most visited sites. Here you walk on the same marble streets that Roman citizens used almost 2,000 years ago. This guide covers what you need to plan a smooth visit: ticket prices, opening hours, the best gate to enter, and how to get there.

Where Is Ephesus?

Ephesus (Efes in Turkish) is on Türkiye's Aegean coast, about 3 km from the town of Selçuk and roughly 20 km from the seaside resort of Kuşadası. The nearest airport is Izmir Adnan Menderes (ADB), about one hour's drive away. Flights from Istanbul to Izmir take around 1 hour 15 minutes.

Most travellers stay in Kuşadası or Selçuk. Both are much closer to the site than central Izmir.

Ephesus Ticket Prices (2026)

Prices below were valid at the time of writing (October 2026). Entrance fees in Türkiye are reviewed every year, so always check before you travel.

Terrace Houses (inside Ephesus, separate ticket)€15
House of the Virgin Maryabout 700 TL (≈ €12–15)
Ephesus Archaeological Museum (Selçuk)€10
Basilica of St. John€6
Temple of ArtemisFree

Good to know:

  • Tickets are paid in Turkish lira or by card. Euro banknotes are usually not accepted at the ticket office.
  • Children under 8 generally enter free with a passport.
  • The Museum Pass Türkiye and Museum Pass The Aegean cover the Ancient City but not the Terrace Houses.

Opening Hours

  • Summer (April–September): usually 08:00 to about 19:00
  • Winter (October–March): usually 08:00 to about 17:30, with last entry earlier

The House of the Virgin Mary keeps similar hours. It usually closes a little earlier in winter.

Upper Gate or Lower Gate?

Ephesus has two entrances:

  • Upper Gate (Magnesia Gate): quieter, and the route runs downhill through the city. This is the gate most guided tours use.
  • Lower Gate (Harbour Gate): where cruise-ship coaches arrive. Queues here can be long in the morning.

If you are visiting on your own, take a taxi to the upper gate and walk down to the lower gate. You will see everything in order without climbing back uphill.

How Long Do You Need?

  • Ancient City only: 2–3 hours
  • Ancient City + Terrace Houses: 3–4 hours
  • Full day: add the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and the Ephesus Museum or Şirince village

How to Get to Ephesus

From Kuşadası: 20–25 minutes by car. Most shared tours pick up from Kuşadası hotels between 09:00 and 09:15.

From Selçuk: 5 minutes by car, or a pleasant walk in cooler months.

From Izmir Airport: about 1 hour by private transfer. Kuşadası is about 1 hour 15 minutes.

From Istanbul: fly to Izmir (about 1 h 15 min), then transfer to Kuşadası or Selçuk. You can visit Ephesus on a long day trip, but a two-night stay is far more relaxed. See our guide: How to Visit Ephesus from Istanbul.

Guided Tour or On Your Own?

Visitors in front of the Library of Celsus at Ephesus

Ephesus has very little on-site signage. A licensed guide turns the ruins into a story: who built the Library of Celsus, why the theatre held 24,000 people, and how daily life looked in the Terrace Houses. A guided tour also solves transport, tickets and lunch in one booking.

Our Istanbul & Ephesus Tour Package includes a full-day guided Ephesus tour with hotel pickup in Kuşadası. Entrance fees for Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary are included, and so is lunch. Want to add Pamukkale’s travertine terraces? See our 7-day Ephesus & Pamukkale tour from Istanbul.

Top Tips for Your Visit

  1. Start early. Arrive at opening time to beat the heat and the cruise crowds.
  2. Wear proper shoes. The marble is polished smooth and can be slippery.
  3. Bring water and sun protection. There is very little shade, and summer temperatures can pass 35°C.
  4. Add the Terrace Houses. The €15 ticket is worth it for the mosaics and frescoes.
  5. Dress modestly for the House of the Virgin Mary. It is an active place of pilgrimage.
