How to Visit Ephesus from Istanbul: Day Trip vs. 2-Night Stay
Istanbul and Ephesus are two of Türkiye's most famous destinations, but they are about 550 km apart. The good news is that combining them is easy if you choose the right option. Here is an honest comparison.
Option 1: Flight Day Trip
How it works: You take an early morning flight from Istanbul to Izmir (about 1 h 15 min). A guide meets you at the airport, you drive about an hour to Ephesus, tour the site, have lunch, and fly back to Istanbul in the evening.
Pros
- No hotel change
- Ephesus fits into a short Istanbul stay
Cons
- A very long day: you leave the hotel around 05:00 and return around 22:00
- Four airport transfers and two flights in one day
- No time for the Terrace Houses, Şirince or the museum
- Tiring for families with children
Best for: Travellers with very limited time who only want to "tick off" Ephesus.
Option 2: Overnight Bus
There are overnight buses from Istanbul to Selçuk and Kuşadası, taking about 9–10 hours each way.
Pros: Cheapest option. Cons: Long, tiring journey, and you lose the day after to fatigue. We do not recommend this for families or short holidays.
Option 3: Fly and Stay 2 Nights in Kuşadası (Recommended)

How it works: You fly from Istanbul to Izmir, transfer to Kuşadası and stay two nights by the sea. You tour Ephesus on a relaxed full day, then fly back to Istanbul for your onward connection.
Pros
- A calm, unhurried Ephesus visit with time for every highlight
- Sea views, promenade walks and seafood restaurants in Kuşadası
- Free time for a beach afternoon or Şirince village
- Much more comfortable for families and older travellers
Cons
- One extra hotel change
Best for: Most travellers, especially families and anyone with 5 days or more in Türkiye.
Quick Comparison
| Flight day trip | Overnight bus | 2-night stay | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel time | ~17 hours door to door | ~20 hours return | Relaxed, spread over 3 days |
| Comfort | Low | Very low | High |
| Time at Ephesus | 3–4 hours | Full day | Full day |
| Extras (Şirince, beach) | No | Possible | Yes |
| Family-friendly | Limited | No | Yes |

Tips for Combining Istanbul and Ephesus
- Fly into Istanbul and out of Istanbul. The domestic flight back from Izmir connects easily with most international departures from Istanbul Airport (IST).
- Book domestic flights early in spring and autumn, when demand is high.
- Pack light for the Ephesus leg. Many travellers leave a large suitcase at their Istanbul hotel.
- Allow at least 3 hours between your Izmir–Istanbul flight and an international departure.
Before you book, check ticket prices and opening hours at Ephesus, find out what to see once you are there and read our tips for families.
