Overview
Pamukkale - literally "Cotton Castle" - is a hillside of blindingly white travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich thermal springs, layered directly on top of the ruins of Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman spa city founded in the 2nd century BC. This full-day trip covers both in one go, with round-trip transport from Antalya or İzmir.
The terraces: A guided walk across the travertine pools, with time to wade or swim in the shallow, mineral-warmed water - shoes off is mandatory on the terraces to protect the formations.
Hierapolis: The ancient city above the terraces, including the well-preserved Roman theatre, the Plutonium (a sacred gateway to the underworld in antiquity), and the necropolis - one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia.
Lunch: A included stop at a local restaurant before the drive back, timed so you're not rushed at either site.
