This Pamukkale day trip takes you from Antalya or İzmir / Kuşadası to the white travertine terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis in one full day of about 12 hours. Pamukkale means “Cotton Castle”: a hillside formed by thermal springs, above a Roman spa city.
You are picked up early in the morning and drive about 3 to 3.5 hours each way. At Pamukkale you walk the terraces barefoot and explore Hierapolis, with free time to swim in the terrace pools before lunch.

Your day starts with a hotel pick-up, around 05:00–05:30 from Antalya or around 06:00–06:30 from İzmir. The drive to Pamukkale takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours from either city, so you can rest on the way before a long day on foot at the site.

At Pamukkale you walk across the white travertine terraces with your guide. The terraces were formed by mineral-rich thermal springs, and shoes must be taken off on the formations to protect them. During free time you can wade or swim in the shallow, mineral-warmed pools. The Hierapolis entrance covers the terraces and the ancient city.

Above the terraces lies Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman spa city founded in the 2nd century BC. Your guide leads you through the well-preserved Roman theatre, the Plutonium, which people in antiquity saw as a sacred gateway to the underworld, and the necropolis, one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia. You spend roughly 4 to 5 hours at the terraces and Hierapolis in total.

Pamukkale Travertine Terraces
Warm spring water rich in minerals has built these white travertine terraces and their shallow turquoise pools over centuries. The surface is fragile, so visitors cross it barefoot on the marked paths.
Hierapolis
Hierapolis began in the 2nd century BC and prospered as a Roman spa, drawing visitors to its hot springs. Colonnaded streets, bath ruins and tombs lie scattered across the slope above the terraces.
Roman Theatre of Hierapolis
The Roman theatre of Hierapolis still shows a large part of its decorated stage building. Rows of stone seats climb the slope and give a wide view over the valley below.
Antique Pool
A thermal pool fed by warm springs, where fallen marble columns lie under the clear water. Swimming among these ancient pieces is what draws visitors; the pool has its own entrance fee.
Plutonium
A cave-like opening in Hierapolis that people in antiquity regarded as a sacred gateway to the underworld. Its place in the ancient city makes it one of the more unusual stops of the walk.
Hierapolis Necropolis
One of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia, with tombs of many shapes lining the road outside the city walls. It shows how much care the people of Hierapolis gave to their dead.
