Turkey Honeymoon Guide: Cave Suites, Bosphorus Sunsets & the Turquoise Coast

Picture the first week of married life like this. You wake before dawn in a cave suite carved into the rock, step onto your terrace with a coffee and watch a hundred hot air balloons rise over the valley. A few days later you're on a private boat on the Bosphorus as the sun sets behind the minarets. Then it's sea, sand and nothing on the schedule at all.

That mix of culture, adventure and pure relaxation in a single trip is why Turkey works so well for honeymoons. We plan honeymoons every season, and this guide covers the places couples love most, when to go and how to put it together.

Why Turkey for a Honeymoon?

  • Variety in one trip. A great city, a fairy-tale landscape and a Mediterranean coastline, all connected by short domestic flights.
  • Romantic stays. Cave suites with private terraces, historic palace hotels on the Bosphorus and boutique hotels above turquoise bays.
  • Memorable experiences. Balloon flights, private yacht dinners, couples' hammams and long dinners by the water.
  • Good value for luxury. Compared with many honeymoon destinations, Turkey offers five-star experiences at a reasonable price.

Istanbul: Romance on Two Continents

Istanbul is the perfect start or end to a honeymoon. It's dramatic, historic and full of atmosphere, especially in the evening.

Romantic things to do in Istanbul:

  • A private Bosphorus yacht at sunset. Just the two of you, palaces and mansions sliding past, and the city lights coming on as you turn back. We can arrange private yacht cruises with dinner on board.
  • A Bosphorus dinner cruise. A more social evening with dinner and a show as you cruise beneath the illuminated bridges. See our Bosphorus Dinner Cruise.
  • A couples' hammam. Many hotel spas and some historic hammams offer private sessions for couples. Our hammam guide explains what to expect.
  • Rooftop dinners with a view of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, or across the Bosphorus.
  • Sunset at Galata or Çamlıca Hill, then a late dinner in Karaköy.

Where to stay: for a honeymoon, choose a Bosphorus-front hotel or a stylish boutique hotel in Sultanahmet, Galata or Karaköy. Our where to stay in Istanbul guide compares the main areas.

Cappadocia: The Most Romantic Place in Turkey

If there's one place to splurge on your honeymoon, make it Cappadocia.

Book a cave suite

Cappadocia's cave hotels are unlike anywhere else in the world. Look for a suite with a private terrace facing the balloons, and consider an upgrade to a room with a fireplace, a hammam-style bathroom or a heated pool. Our Cappadocia cave hotel guide explains how to choose.

Fly in a hot air balloon

The balloon flight at sunrise is the moment most couples remember forever. Many operators offer private or small-basket flights for couples, which are worth considering for a honeymoon. Flights depend on the weather, so plan for at least two nights to have a backup morning. Our hot air balloon guide covers everything you need to know.

Other romantic moments

  • Sunset at Red Valley or Love Valley (yes, that's really its name)
  • A private horseback ride through the valleys at golden hour
  • Dinner in a cave restaurant with local wine or fresh fruit juices
  • A photoshoot among the fairy chimneys, which many couples book for the morning of the balloon flight

Ephesus and Pamukkale: History and Thermal Waters

For couples who love history, add the Aegean. Ephesus is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world, and walking its marble streets together is unforgettable. Pamukkale, with its white travertine terraces and the Antique Pool where you swim among fallen Roman columns in warm thermal water, makes a beautiful overnight stop.

Read our Ephesus travel guide and Pamukkale travel guide, or see the 7-day Istanbul, Ephesus & Pamukkale tour.

The Turquoise Coast: Time to Do Nothing

Every honeymoon needs a few days with no plans at all. Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean coasts are made for that.

  • Antalya: A historic old town, Kaleiçi, waterfalls, ancient cities and luxurious beach resorts. Easy to reach with direct flights. See our things to do in Antalya guide and our Antalya Experience Package.
  • Kaş and Kalkan: Small, charming harbour towns with boutique hotels, sea-view terraces and crystal-clear water. Ideal for couples who prefer intimate over big resorts.
  • Fethiye and Ölüdeniz: The famous blue lagoon, boat trips to hidden bays and tandem paragliding for adventurous couples.
  • Bodrum: Stylish, lively and upmarket, with luxury hotels, beach clubs and great restaurants.
  • A blue cruise (gulet): A few days on a traditional wooden boat, anchoring in quiet bays and swimming straight off the deck. Private gulet charters are a dream honeymoon in early summer and early autumn.

For ideas on beaches, see our best beaches in Antalya, Muğla and İzmir.

When Is the Best Time for a Honeymoon in Turkey?

  • April to June: Our favourite for a mixed honeymoon. Warm days, green landscapes, good balloon conditions and a sea that's warming up by late May and June.
  • July and August: Perfect for a beach-focused honeymoon, but hot in Istanbul and inland, and busy everywhere.
  • September and October: Excellent. The sea is still warm, the crowds have eased and the light is beautiful.
  • November to March: Ideal for a city and Cappadocia honeymoon, with snow on the fairy chimneys and cosy cave suites, but not for the beach. See our Turkey in winter guide.

Our best time to visit Turkey guide goes through the year month by month.

A 10-Day Turkey Honeymoon Itinerary

  • Days 1 to 3: Istanbul. Arrive and settle into a Bosphorus or old-city hotel. Explore Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the bazaars. End with a private sunset yacht cruise.
  • Day 4: Fly to Cappadocia. Check into your cave suite and watch the sunset from Red Valley.
  • Days 5 to 6: Cappadocia. Balloon flight at sunrise, valleys and underground cities, a private horseback ride and dinner in a cave restaurant.
  • Day 7: Fly to the coast. Head to Antalya, Kaş or Bodrum.
  • Days 8 to 10: The Turquoise Coast. Beach days, a private boat trip, a couples' spa treatment and long dinners by the sea.

Short on time? The 5-day Istanbul & Cappadocia tour combines the two most romantic stops with flights included, and the premium version includes a cave hotel. For a longer journey, the 9-day Grand Turkey Heritage tour adds the Aegean, with an optional cave hotel upgrade in Cappadocia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Turkey good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Turkey combines a historic city, unique landscapes like Cappadocia and a beautiful coastline in one trip, with romantic hotels and experiences at good value compared with many honeymoon destinations.

What is the most romantic place in Turkey?

Cappadocia is the top choice for most couples, thanks to its cave suites and sunrise balloon flights. Istanbul's Bosphorus and the small harbour towns of Kaş and Kalkan are close behind.

How many days do you need for a honeymoon in Turkey?

Seven to ten days is ideal. That allows two to three nights in Istanbul, two to three in Cappadocia and a few relaxing days on the coast.

When is the best month for a honeymoon in Turkey?

May, June, September and early October are the best months for a mixed honeymoon of city, Cappadocia and beach. For a city and Cappadocia honeymoon with snow, choose December to February.

Yes. Several operators offer private baskets for couples, though availability is limited and flights depend on the weather. Book early, especially in high season.
