Where to Stay in Istanbul: Taksim vs Sultanahmet

It's the first real decision almost every Istanbul trip runs into: stay next to the monuments, or stay where the city goes out at night? Sultanahmet and Taksim are both good answers — they're just answers to different questions. They sit on opposite sides of the Golden Horn, they feel completely different after dark, and which one suits you depends mostly on how long you're staying and what you want your evenings to look like. Here's how each one actually feels to stay in, who it suits, and the hotels we use in both.

Sultanahmet: Walking Distance to Everything You Came to See

Sultanahmet is the Old City. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque face each other across Sultanahmet Square, the Hippodrome is right beside them, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are a short walk away, and you can get from the Hippodrome to the Grand Bazaar in about fifteen minutes on foot. If your trip is mostly about those sights, nothing beats walking out of your hotel and joining the Hagia Sophia line before the tour buses arrive. It's also the neighbourhood our private Old City guided tour spends its whole day in, so from a Sultanahmet hotel you're already on the route.

The trade-off is the evening. The neighbourhood revolves around the monuments, so once they close it's calmer and more low-key than the other side of the Golden Horn. For some people that's a feature — a quiet night before an early start. For others, it's the reason they wish they'd stayed in Taksim.

Who it suits: first-time visitors on a short trip, people whose plan is mostly the Old City, and anyone who'd rather be first in line at Topkapı than out late.

A hotel we use there: the Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel — two minutes from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, with an outdoor pool, a botanic garden and complimentary afternoon tea. It's the Istanbul hotel on the upper tiers of our Istanbul & Cappadocia tours, where Istanbul is only part of the trip and it makes sense to sleep right next to the sights.

Taksim: Food, Nightlife and the Transit Hub

Taksim is where Istanbul lives in the evening. Taksim Square and İstiklal Street are lined with restaurants, bars and shops, the streets stay busy late, and the area is one of the city's main transport hubs, which makes it an easy base for everything that isn't in the Old City — a day on the Bosphorus, the ferries, day trips out of town.

The Old City is across the Golden Horn, so you won't be at Hagia Sophia in five minutes. But the walk there is a sight in itself: along İstiklal, down past Galata Tower, and across Galata Bridge with the Old City skyline in front of you. It's the route of the walking day on our 7-day tour for exactly that reason. (The walk down is lovely. The walk back up is why taxis exist.)

Who it suits: longer stays, travellers who want dinner and a stroll after dark, and anyone whose itinerary spreads beyond Sultanahmet — to the Bosphorus, the Princes' Islands or Bursa.

Hotels we use there:

  • Konak Hotel Istanbul — a 4★ hotel in Taksim, and the Standard-tier hotel on our 7-day package.
  • Arts Hotel Taksim — a five-minute walk to İstiklal Street, with modern rooms and 30 years of hospitality experience behind it; the Comfort-tier hotel.
  • Rixos Pera Istanbul — a 5-star hotel in Tepebaşı, Beyoğlu, on the same side of the Golden Horn as Taksim; the VIP-tier hotel.

Side by Side

  • Walking to Hagia Sophia: Sultanahmet — minutes. Taksim — across the Golden Horn; a proper walk or a ride.
  • Evenings: Sultanahmet — calmer once the monuments close. Taksim — busy, loud and full of places to eat.
  • The rest of the city: Sultanahmet — ideal for the Old City, less so for everything else. Taksim — a transport hub, better placed for a varied week.
  • Best for: Sultanahmet — a short, monument-focused trip. Taksim — a longer stay with day trips and nights out.

Why Our 7-Day Package Puts You in Taksim

If you're staying a week, the maths tilts towards Taksim. On a seven-day trip the Old City is two days out of seven; the rest is the Bosphorus, Büyükada, Bursa and a walking day that starts at Taksim Square. That's why all three tiers of our 7-day Istanbul tour package are based on the Taksim side — Konak Hotel Istanbul on Standard, Arts Hotel Taksim on Comfort and Rixos Pera Istanbul on VIP, or similar in each case.

And if you'd rather not make this decision at all, that's what a package is for: the hotel is chosen, the guided days are planned around it, and the Old City days come with a guide who knows which entrance has the shorter line. You can see the hotels for each tier of the 7-day Istanbul tour on the tour page.

If Istanbul is only a couple of nights before or after somewhere else — a Cappadocia trip from Istanbul, say — the argument flips, and Sultanahmet usually makes more sense.

Agency Insider Tip: If you can't decide, picture your last evening. If it's dinner and a slow walk along İstiklal, stay in Taksim. If it's an early night so you're first through the gate at Topkapı, stay in Sultanahmet.

Either way, the neighbourhood matters less than the plan. For how a full week fits together from a Taksim base, see our 7-day Istanbul itinerary, and for what the Old City tickets will cost wherever you sleep, our Istanbul entrance fees guide.
