Safranbolu & Amasra Itinerary: How to Spend 2, 3 or 4 Days from Istanbul

If you are planning a Safranbolu and Amasra itinerary from Istanbul, the main question is how many days to give it. This guide sets out sample plans for two, three and four days, with realistic drive times and a note on what you will see each day. The towns are about 400 km from Istanbul, so the driving is part of the plan; a slightly longer trip is usually much more enjoyable than a rushed one.

Planning Basics

  • Distances and times: Istanbul to Safranbolu is about 400 km, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road with stops. Safranbolu to Amasra is around 1.5 to 2 hours. Amasra back to Istanbul is about 5 to 5.5 hours.
  • Transport: a car, private driver or transfer is the most flexible; buses work for a Safranbolu-only trip. Our Istanbul–Safranbolu transport options compare them.
  • Where to sleep: a konak hotel in the Çarşı for Safranbolu and a sea-view hotel in Amasra; book early for weekends and holidays.
  • Pace: count drive days as half-days; you will arrive tired after four or five hours on the road.

Start by deciding how much driving you are comfortable with. The 400 km between Istanbul and Safranbolu is the longest single leg, and it is best treated as a half-day on its own. Everything after that is a short hop: Safranbolu is compact, and the coast is only 1.5 to 2 hours away.

Meals are easy to improvise because the old towns have plenty of small restaurants and cafés, so you rarely need to book a table. For the best choice of konak rooms and sea-view hotels, reserve early for Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays.

Check the daylight for your travel month before you lock in the plan. In summer you have long evenings for sunsets and the waterfront; in winter, aim to reach each town by mid-afternoon so the sights are not rushed in the dark.

2-Day Itinerary: Safranbolu Only

A short weekend plan for those who want the old town without the coast.

  • Day 1: Leave Istanbul in the morning, arrive in Safranbolu after about 4.5 to 5 hours with a lunch break. Check in at a konak, walk the Çarşı, see Cinci Han, and finish with sunset on Hıdırlık Hill.
  • Day 2: Visit the Kaymakamlar Museum House, then drive to Yörük Village and Tokatlı Canyon. Return to Istanbul in the afternoon; allow the full drive time and an early evening arrival.

This is the most compact way to see the highlights. Our things to do in Safranbolu list helps you choose what to drop.

A quick tip: leave the museum house and the canyon for the morning of day 2 and keep your return drive for the afternoon. If you start late on day 1, swap the sunset viewpoint for an evening walk through the lanes.

3-Day Itinerary: Safranbolu + Amasra (Fast-Paced)

A busier plan that adds the coast, with one long driving day at each end.

  • Day 1: Istanbul to Safranbolu (about 4.5 to 5 hours). Çarşı walk and Hıdırlık sunset.
  • Day 2: Morning in Safranbolu (museum house, Yörük Village or the canyon), then drive to Amasra (1.5 to 2 hours). Afternoon at the harbour and castle walls, Boztepe at sunset.
  • Day 3: Short walk by the harbour, then the drive back to Istanbul (about 5 to 5.5 hours).

It works, but you will mostly be moving. If you prefer a calmer plan, stretch it to four days.

The risk with this plan is rushing day 2, when you move between towns. Choose either the museum house or the canyon in the morning rather than both, and leave Safranbolu by early afternoon so you reach Amasra with daylight for the castle walk.

4-Day Itinerary: Safranbolu + Amasra at a Relaxed Pace

This is the route of our private four-day Safranbolu and Amasra route, with two nights in Safranbolu and one in Amasra.

Day 1: Istanbul to Safranbolu

Morning drive east (about 4.5 to 5 hours with rest and lunch stops). Check in at a historic konak, take a late-afternoon walk through the Çarşı and watch the sunset from Hıdırlık Hill.

Dinner is at your own choice; ask your host for a traditional restaurant in the old town.

Day 2: Safranbolu

Visit the Kaymakamlar Museum House and Yörük Village, spend midday at Tokatlı Canyon with the İncekaya Aqueduct and the glass viewing terrace, and finish with a lokum and saffron tasting in the old town. A traditional hamam is an optional extra.

Allow a slow pace; this is the day for photographs rather than ticking boxes.

Day 3: Safranbolu to Amasra

Drive north to the coast (about 1.5 to 2 hours) with a photo stop at the historic riverside houses of Bartın. Spend the afternoon at Amasra Castle, Kemere Bridge and the twin harbours, and watch the sunset from Boztepe.

Check in to your sea-view hotel, then walk the waterfront as the light fades.

Day 4: Amasra to Istanbul

A slow breakfast and a last stroll through the harbour and the local market, then the drive back to Istanbul (about 5 to 5.5 hours with a lunch stop). Meals other than breakfast are at your own choice.

Details of each stop are in our Amasra travel guide.

You can shorten this plan by merging days 2 and 3 into a single move, or lengthen it with an extra night in Safranbolu for Bulak Mencilis Cave and a slower pace.

Tips for Families and Older Travellers

  • Cobbles and stairs: the old towns are walkable but uneven. Comfortable shoes matter, and konak rooms often involve stairs.
  • Rest breaks: build in coffee stops on drive days and let children stretch their legs.
  • Child seats: if you travel by private vehicle, ask for child seats in advance.
  • Heat and cold: summer afternoons in the old town can be warm and winter days are short, so plan sightseeing around daylight.
  • Walking load: skip the hill walks and canyon stops if you prefer to keep days gentle; the Çarşı and the Amasra waterfront are flat enough for a relaxed visit.

Whatever your group, treat the drives as part of the trip: stop for tea, let everyone stretch their legs, and try to arrive before dark. A calm pace is what makes these two small towns feel special.

If you would rather not organise the days yourself, the four-day route above is the one our private tour follows, with the driving, the guide and the hotels arranged for you.
