Overview
The Green Tour is Cappadocia's classic south-route day trip, built around three sites that show a different side of the region than the fairy chimneys and balloon views most visitors already know. You go underground first, spend the middle of the day walking a river canyon, and finish looking out over the valley from a rock-cut monastery.
Derinkuyu Underground City: One of Cappadocia's largest excavated underground settlements, reaching roughly eight levels below the surface. It once sheltered thousands of people along with their livestock and food stores. You'll walk through ventilation shafts, stables, a church, and kitchens carved directly into the volcanic rock.
Ihlara Valley: A walk of roughly 4 kilometers along the Melendiz River at the bottom of a canyon lined with rock-cut churches and faded Byzantine frescoes. It's the greenest stretch of the whole day - poplar trees, running water, and canyon walls rising over 100 meters on either side.
Lunch in Belisırma: A stop in the small village of Belisırma, where restaurants set their tables right over the stream that runs through the valley floor.
Selime Monastery: A multi-story rock-cut monastery at the northern end of the valley, with a cathedral hall, kitchens, and stables carved into the cliff face. It's often pointed out as one of the locations that inspired scenes in Star Wars.
Pigeon Valley: A short stop at a panoramic viewpoint over Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) on the way back, named for the hundreds of dovecotes local farmers carved into the rock faces to collect pigeon droppings for fertilizer.

“Derinkuyu was much bigger than I expected - we were down there for almost an hour and only saw a fraction of it. The walk through Ihlara Valley afterward was the perfect contrast, all shade and running water. Lunch by the river in Belisırma was a nice touch.”

“Selime Monastery at the end of the valley was the highlight for me - you can climb up through the rooms and the view over the valley from the top is worth the walk. Our guide knew the history of every stop, not just the highlights.”
